  Taipei Zoo The Taipei Zoo , also known as the "Muzha Zoo," is a public zoological garden in Taipei's Wenshan District. It is Taiwan's most well-known zoological garden and a pioneer in conservation, research and education, and recreation. With a total area of 165 hectares, of which more than 90 ha are developed, it is one of Asia's largest zoos. History The Taipei Zoo was founded in 1914 as the Maruyama Zoo (Japanese:, Hepburn: Maruyama Dbutsuen) in Mt. Maruyama (modern-day Yuanshan), on the northern outskirts of Taihoku (modern-day Taipei). Mr. Oe, a Japanese citizen, originally owned the private zoological garden. The following year, the Japanese government in Taiwan purchased the property and turned it into a public park. Following World War II, the Republic of China (ROC) retreated to Taiwan, and ownership of the park was transferred to the ROC Taipei City Government.
