Gallery of Old Master Paintings

The Gallery of Old Masters Paintings (German: Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister ) is an art gallery in Dresden, Germany, located in the Semper Wing of the Zwinger Palace. The art gallery houses a collection of nearly 750 paintings 1 ranging from the Renaissance to the Baroque that were amassed by the Electors of Saxony Augustus II and his son Augustus III in the first half of the 18th century. The second of them bought a hundred paintings from the Duke of Modena in 1746, which made the gallery famous throughout Europe 2, and added the Sistine Madonna by Raphael Sanzio in 1753.
The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister is the home of the Dresden State Art Collections, which are owned by the Free State of Saxony.

When Augustus, Elector of Saxony founded the Kunstkammer (Art Chamber) of the Electors of Saxony in Dresden in 1560, paintings were subservient to science collectibles, other works of art, and curiosities. 3 At the beginning of the 18th century, Augustus II the Strong and his son Federico Augusto II began systematically collecting paintings. Those two art-loving Electors of Saxony, who were also Kings of Poland, significantly expanded the collections in less than 60 years. In 1745, the top 100 pieces fromThe 100 best pieces from the collection of Francesco III Duke of Modena, who arrived in Dresden the following year, were purchased in 1745. As the collection of paintings grew, more space was needed for storage and display, so it was relocated from Dresden Castle to the adjacent Stallgebäude (the electors' stable building) in 1747. Meanwhile, the collection had become well-known in Europe. Paintings from all over Europe were purchased and shipped to Dresden, including those from Italy, Paris, Amsterdam, and Prague. The Electors' purchasing spree culminated in 1754 with the purchase of Raphael Sanzio's Sistine Madonna. 3 The Dresden painting gallery became not only one of the most famous Old Master collections in northern Europe,However, it was also a forerunner of the modern museums that would emerge at the end of the 18th century. In 1838, a gallery commission working for King Frederick Augustus II commissioned the architect Gottfried Semper to design an appropriate architectural setting for the collection. Between 1847 and 1854, the Zwinger's new gallery wing was constructed. The Neues Königliches Museum (New Royal Museum) opened on September 25, 1855, in the Semper Gallery, where it still stands today.
