Kit foxes, tortoises, lizards, and two bighorn sheep were housed as early as 1974, and between 1974 and 1975, the Mojave Desert Gardens, a replica of the Alta California deserts, were built. Additional facilities were gradually added, including greenhouses and a series of new habitat gardens, as well as a number of new animals such as Rhim gazelles (1981); Cougars, Bobcats, and Badgers (1993); cheetahs and warthogs (1995); model trains (1998); giraffes and ostriches (1998). The gardens currently claim to be the only American zoological and botanical garden dedicated solely to the world's deserts, and they offer environmental education, native fauna recovery, and propagation., the propagation of endangered plants, and the breeding of native and African wildlife, including the area's iconic bighorn sheep. His unusual meerkat display inspired Walt Disney Studios cartoonists to create the character "Timon," who appears in the film The Lion King. A train bridge model. The holiday season brings the zoo's "WildLights" celebration, in which over 275,000 candles illuminate lively scenes throughout the season. It also hosts one of the largest model railway exhibitions in the LGB world, which includes the world's longest model bridge span.
