Moody Gardens
Moody Gardens
Moody Gardens is an educational tourist destination in Galveston, Texas, with a golf course and hotel that opened in 1986. Nature is used by the non-profit destination to educate and excite visitors about conservation and wildlife. The Aquarium Pyramid, one of the largest in the region, houses many species of fish and other marine animals; the Rain forest Pyramid, which houses tropical plants, animals, birds, butterflies, reptiles, and a variety of other rain forest animals, including free-roaming monkeys and two-toed sloths; and the Discovery Pyramid, which focuses on science-oriented exhibits and activities. Palm Beach, a landscaped white sand beach open primarily in the summer, features a small water park for children, freshwater lagoons, a lazy river, tower slides, a hot tub, zip lines, and a splash pad play area for children. Moody Gardens also had a Ride Film Theater with motion-based pod seating, the MG 3D Theater with the largest screen in Texas, a paddlewheel cruise boat, a hotel, golf course, and a convention center. Many local tourists from Houston and its surrounding suburbs visit the complex. Geoffrey Jellicoe was commissioned by the owners to design the landscape. Gardens of the Mind: Geoffrey Jellicoe's Genius is described in Gardens of the Mind: Geoffrey Jellicoe's Genius by Michael Spenser's (Antique Collectors Club, 1992).
Pyramid Aquarium
This blue pyramid, which opened in 1999, is about 12 stories tall. This pyramid's massive pools house approximately 10,000 marine animals such as fish, sharks, seals, and penguins. Each one represents a different sea region: North Pacific, South Pacific, South Atlantic, and Caribbean.
Pyramid of Exploration
The Discovery Pyramid, which opened in 1997, features travelling exhibits as well as the ride film (motion simulator). Moody Gardens added the SpongeBob SubPants Adventure ride to the bottom level of the Discovery Pyramid in May of 2015. The audience "dives into adventure on a submarine voyage along with SpongeBob and all his Bikini Bottom friends!" in this amusement ride. In 2019, the SpongeBob SubPants Adventure was closed and replaced by "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: An Interactive Adventure". This interactive 4D film follows Deep, a technologically enhanced pufferfish, as he guides the Nautilus submarine through various parts of the ocean selected by the audience. Deep is played by a live actor who both voices and controls the character.
Deep is played by a live actor who voices and controls the character in real time, effectively creating a personalized show for each audience. The upper level of the massive deep pink colored Discovery Pyramid is currently hosting JAM REMASTERED: THE SCIENCE OF MUSIC, an experience that explores the relationship between music, science, and mathematics (Updated June 2021)
The Palm Beaches
Palm Beach first opened in 1988 with a constructed white sand beach and later expanded to include a full-service water park. Aquarium Adventure, a group of slides with a dump bucket, a wave pool, a lazy river, Tower Slides (two water slides), and Splashpad, the water park's toddler section, are all part of the water park. The man-made beach is made of white sand and is adjacent to, but not connected to, Galveston Bay.
