Phillips Park Zoo

Phillips Park Zoo

Phillips Park Zoo is situated on the grounds of Phillips Park in Aurora, Illinois, USA. It was founded in 1915 and is still open year-round with no admission charge. It once housed exotic animals such as giraffes and monkeys, but after Brook field Zoo opened in 1934, the zoo's focus shifted to native animals.

History
A birdhouse was built in 1916, following the establishment of Phillips Park Zoo in 1915. The zoo had 5 black bears, 10 monkeys, 19 elk and 19 buffalo, 2 foxes, 1 wolf, and 20 deer by 1920, in addition to hundreds of birds. Unfortunately, the original birdhouse was destroyed by a hailstorm in 1933. Following the loss of the birdhouse and the opening of the Brookfield Zoo in 1934, the Phillips Park Zoo refocused on displaying native animals. Mastodon bones and tusks discovered in the park were displayed at the zoo in 1937, earning it the title of museum. Between 1937 and the 1980s, only two major projects were undertaken at the zoo. A barn was built in 1950. Then, in 1964, The zoo now has a water wheel. Swans and other farm animals now have exhibits centred on these original structures. From the 1980s to the present day, the zoo has added new exhibit areas and animals. The cougar exhibit, which opened in 2005, was the most recent of these additions. Extensive work has also been done on the otter, wolf, and elk exhibits, as well as the reptile house. Chopper the Caiman and two bald eagles named Kenai and Denali were among the new additions.

North American river otters, Great horned owls, Llamas and Pygmy goats, Gray wolves, farmyard animals including Ducks, Geese, and Swans, Bald eagles, Reptiles from over ten different species along with a variety of smaller animals, Indian peafowl, and Elk are among the exhibits depicted on the zoo map.
